Questions You May Have Before Your First Eyebrow Microblading Appointment

Eyebrow microblading is a relatively new technique in which a tiny tool is used to create fine strokes of tattoo ink, resulting in a look similar to that of a natural eyebrow. While microblading is not entirely permanent, the effects are long-lasting, saving you the hassle of having to draw on or enhance your eyebrows each morning. If you're about to have microblading done for the first time, you're probably excited to show off your new brows — but you may also have some of these questions.

How long does microblading take?

Most stylists schedule appointments for microblading every 2 hours. While you may not spend a full 2 hours in the chair having your eyebrows worked on, you should plan on being in the salon for up to 2 hours so you can sign release forms, discuss your style preferences with the stylist, and receive follow-up instructions.

What does the procedure feel like?

Microblading does hurt a little, but most people agree it hurts significantly less than getting a conventional tattoo. It's common for stylists to apply a numbing gel to the area before they begin work, which should minimize your discomfort. If the pain starts becoming more intense again as they are working, you can ask your stylist to take a pause and apply more numbing gel.

After microblading, your eyebrow region will be sore for a couple of days. You can take a dose of over-the-counter pain relievers, if needed, to ease the pain.

How long will the results last?

Most microblading results last about a year. If you have naturally dry skin, your results may last a bit longer since the natural oils in the skin are what eventually wash the pigment away. You can also help your eyebrow look last longer by staying out of the sun, and when you do need to go in the sun, wearing large sunglasses that extend up past your eyebrows.

Do you have to prepare for your appointment in any way?

If you are using any medicated creams, serums, or washes on your face, it is a good idea to stop using them a few weeks before your appointment. You don't want them to cause any excessive irritation. Also, stay out of the sun and don't tan for at least two weeks before your session. If you're taking any prescription medications, ask your doctor if it's safe to continue taking them leading up to your eyebrow microblading session.
